While I don't know why you may or may not have known about this, I can tell you why they're doing it. In my opinion, there is a serious lack of original ideas in Hollywood these days, so any book that can feasibly be made into a movie is going to get that treatment. It's also good for the publisher because they can re-issue the book with a "movie tie-in" cover, which people will run out and buy because they often want to read the book after they've seen the movie.
