I think self-publishing is better... It's much more difficult to get a publisher and you probably make just as much money (little to none).

While I am not a writer myself, and don't know very much about the publishing industry in particular, I am fairly certain that the old model of agents/publishers will be a costly experience for almost any writer starting up today. The old media houses are dying, and I think its a very bad idea to attach yourself to any of them. If your product is good and you advertise it smart, it will sell. Maybe not so much in brick and mortar stores (if at all), but certainly on Amazon, Audible, Itunes store etc

Good Luck!

It depends.

A publishing house will do a lot of the hard work of marketing for you and there are some things you may have to change that you might not want to.

Self publishing (such as through Lulu.com) means you're doing everything yourself. And I do mean everything. The trade off here is that you have complete freedom.

So it depends on what exactly you want and don't want, your time, how hard you can work, etc.
