Depending on the argument and the person you are arguing with, this can be difficult to answer. If you are going out to dinner and you suggest something and your close friend suggests something else, there is no need to argue. In this situation it is best to compromise and talk things out, not argue. But if someone challenges your authority or challenges your beliefs you have a right to argue. I do not mean yell at the person, but just explain to them what you believe and try and persuade them to listen to you. Arguing after all is just trying to convince other people that you are right and they are wrong. Try not to yell or insult the other person though. This will make things worse and the person will not listen to you.

Can you establish authority through arguing? If the person stops arguing with you, does it mean you won or the other person is cutting his loses and abandoning the conversation? The problem with arguing is that it may not be persuasive or impactful.
