The Sun Also Rises is about men and women who were affected by WWI. According to Sparknotes, "The futile search for meaning in the wake of the Great War shapes The Sun Also Rises. Although the characters rarely mention the war directly, its effects haunt everything they do and say."
There are several ways the impact of WWI on Hemingway's life is reflected in the Sun Also Rises:
1. During WWI Hemingway volunteered for the Italian Red Cross and was injured by fragments of an exploding mortar shell. Jake (the main character) was injured during World War I.
2. After the war, Jake works as a journalist in Paris; Hemingway worked as a European correspondent for the Toronto Daily Star and moved to Paris.
3. Jake and Hemingway are both American expatriates.
