If you like mysteries, the Elizabeth George series with detective Lord Thomas Lynley is very good. www.elizabethgeorgeonline.com/

For adventure with some pointless humor, the Redwall books by Brian Jacques are good, as is his Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series.

Peter Mayle's books French Lessons and books about Provence are very funny and contain adventure--at least the adventure of surviving in a country where he was greeted his first morning by the sight of a man powerwashing his underwear in his front yard. That kind of funny. ;-)

If you like history, the mysteries of Lindsey Davis are very good: good mysteries, good history, good adventure, and good humor.

But if you want all your criteria all at once, try Diana Gabaldon's series, starting with Outlander. When it was first published, booksellers had no idea how to classify it! Now it's a classic with a large legion of fans.

Hope this helps!

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk (the author of Fight Club) is great.

I would like to suggest that you look at novels by Hemingway or one of my favorites is Mary Shelly's Frankenstein

The best mystery novel I read recently was Devices and Desires by P.D. James. She writes mystery in a way that rises above the standard whodunit. The reader gets completely drawn in by the characters and the stories.

Looking for humor? Well, it's not pointless, but Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut is one of the funnier books I've ever read.

I heard the novel "Twilight" that just came out as a movie is actually a worthwhile read. It's supposedly different from the movie and it's very well-written.

If you like Adventure/Mystery/Romance I would strongly suggest you check out the numbered series (the Stephanie Plum series) by Janet Evonovich!

The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly is a great read, the follow up which includes Harry Bosch from his other novels is called The Brass Verdict which is also very good
