The first week, there were fewer levels and they were much easier to reach. But this isn't a video game to be conquered. When someone Darcy blew away the first couple of levels in a matter of days, Jason revised the belt levels, and then again when someone blew those away quickly. The idea wasn't to get a new belt every few days!
It is still VERY easy to get through yellow in a week or less, though.

Now, we are only 60 days in to the experiment but it's already clear that there is enough space between the levels for there to be a real difference between yellow, green, purple and brown. That really is the goal: for the belts to actually mean something.
The tips are intended to show a transition from one belt level to the next. So when you get your green tip we'll know "gee, @fo-sho is taking this seriously and soon they'll make it to the next level."
All that being said the belts are *one* indicator of contribution. Best answers and the quality of each answer are much more important. Also, how members treat each other is of paramount importance.

I think we've got the right belt levels now and I don't see them changing in a major way again. You can see them all here: http://www.mahalo.com/answers/points_guidelines
