How does one choose which books to clear to make way for new ones on the bookshelf?

Get rid of
1. Books that you will never read again and don't have emotional attachment too
2. Books that you did not like too much.

Keep
1. Book that you have an emotional attachment to.
2. Books that will be hard to find again
3. Books that you will re-read many times

But one thing you can do is give the books you think you should get rid of to some friends. If you do that you will still have access to the book if you ever change your mind.
