They don't really say exactly how he speeded up the boat, except it had something to do with the mystical pink umbrella (*cough* wand) It's probably the same method used to get first-years cross the lake, though.

He got there by flying. (yes, I'm serious. It's at the top of page 51 in my copy) The method of flying, I'm not so sure of, except that he can't use a broomstick and the flying motorbike would have been a bit obvious. Thestral, perhaps? Anyways... Yes, to GET to the hut, they use a tiny rowboat and magic.... Hagrid's broken wand is is his umbrella. . I'm pretty certain they get to london by the motorbike and then by train, do they not?
