Oh, lord, all the time. I just bought Stephen King's UR, in Kindle format, yesterday. For years I've had an account at www.fictionwise.com, who I just heard got bought by Barnes and Noble.
If you're talking about free, then the logical place to start is public domain, also known as "the classics" -- Dickens, Shakespeare, Robert Louis Stevenson, all that gang. For them you want to head to Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) where you can find pretty much every under the sun (and growing!), and in every format that you could imagine - text, PDF, various other portable formats.
You can, if you're so inclined, hop onto any of the file sharing services and type in "ebook" - you'll get plenty of hits. Hard to tell whether they are legal, or pirated (but I don't know whether you care). Often if you head for the torrent sites you'll find large gigabyte collections of a few hundred books on a topic. I tend to find those a bit of information overload, I'd rather have 1 book that has the information I need, than 500 that might.

I have downloaded a few ebooks, though most of them were to my Amazon Kindle 2. However you don't have to have a Kindle to download ebooks from Amazon. If you have an iPhone you can buy an ebook from the Amazon Kindle store. Just be warned however, these are DRMed so you will only be able to view them on Amazon sanctioned devices (iphone running Kindle software or an Amazon Kindle or Kindle 2)

marcel m, thank you for answering. I have no idea why someone would give your answer a "no". I guess they did not like you spelling out the website. Still, it's right there in the source!

There are lots of awesome textbooks for download from gigapedia. They're kind of sneaky in that they don't show you the download links unless you register/log in. This is a great resource for students regardless, considering how much textbooks cost nowadays.
