I haven't read that series in a LONG time, so, take that as you will.
I think you HAVE to start with Foundation. It is just such a great book. And if you have to do that, you have to read the rest in that series, which just adds to the greatness.
I don't think it will spoil anything, but I think you'd have an appreciation of the Prelude book more if you understand what comes after.
GREAT series!

Thought the "Prelude" books to be a bit too much. More introspective, I think for me, the original Trilogy was great, next two also very good.
Keep in mind, that the author's writing style evolves as they get older. Attitudes change. The Cautionary Tale he was telling us in the original series, evolves as well.
Asimov is a great writer, I think they all have merit. And the Universe he creates is awesome. I think you can read them all in any order, just keep in mind, the change in time between the books.

For those who've read the books only: Does reading Prelude to Foundation first spoil anything in Foundation & Earth?
I've read Asimov's suggested chronological reading order, and I know the publication dates of the books, so please don't bother copying either of those to me. I'm asking for those who have read the Foundation series themselves: Would reading the prequel books Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation spoil anything revealed in the "last" (chronologically) book Foundation & Earth ?

I didn't think so. I read the originals back in the '70's as a collage student and loved them. Read the next two as they came out. Loved Foundations Edge. Thought the "Prelude" books to be a bit too much. More introspective, I think for me, the original Trilogy was great, next two also very good.

Prelude to Foundation would not be too spoilery, but I'd still recommend reading them in the publshed order. The later written books assume that you are familiar with the world of the earlier ones, and even his robot novels.
EDIT:
Like Dr Matt, it's been a long time since I read them too.
On thinking some more, I think Prelude to Foundation could also be a little bit spoilery for Foundation and Earth. Some things that were written to come as a surprise wouldn't be so much of a one that way round.
