I agree with pruffin that, if you want to self publish, Lulu is the place to use. It's free to publish there, and the book quality is exceptional.
If you want to get in with a major publisher, there are a different steps depending on if you're writing fiction or non fiction. I'll provide the link to a site with detailed information.
Keep in mind though that it is extremely difficult to break in with a large publisher. Recent research here on Mahalo revealed that the chances of getting a book published are between 0.01 and 0.03 percent. This varies depending on the type of book, but in all cases, it's a crap shoot.
Self publishing is a very viable alternative these days, and is allowing many authors to find an audience.
