I think that haiku should strive for the 5-7-5 syllable sequence... I am sure that traditionalist will argue that the definition of haiku is the 5-7-5 sequence, but I've read many haiku poems translated from Japanese that do not always stick to this requirement. What I like most about a good haiku poem is not the feat of being written in 17 syllables, but the what the haiku tries to express. I know many of the haiku I write does not even attempt to stick to this requirement...

No, haiku can have any number of syllables in three lines as long the poem is contemplative and serene.
