If you want SciFi then there's two great places to check out:
Baen Books (www.baen.com) is pioneer in giving away scifi content digitally. At one point you could actually purchase a wonderful CD of their entire library in digital format. No PDF, but a whole variety of Kindle/PalmDoc/RichText/HTML text formats to suit your needs.
Second, Tor.com offers a subscription service where they regularly send you a digital ebook. Again, all scifi (though I believe it does verge into fantasy as well). Great service. All free.

Check out Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page. There are many free .txts of books and essays available on this site. Considering that the books found here are those in public domain, you're not going to find the latest thriller or best seller here. Though, Project Gutenberg has tons of classic literature available.
