Types of body piercings vary from culture to culture, but really you can pierce any part of your body covered by skin or nail. Which types of body piercings are the most common?

Ear
The ear is by far the most common place for both men and women to have piercings. The lower, fleshy area of the earlobe is the area most people pierce. Depending on the exact earlobe, this fleshy area can hold anywhere from two to four piercings. Almost any kind of jewelry works for this piercing, big or small, plug or hoop.

The upper ear can also be pierced, but is seen slightly less often than a lower earlobe piercing. The upper ear has far less flesh around it and is mostly cartilage. This makes the piercing much more painful that a lower lobe one. Upper ear piercings also take more time to heal. Smaller earrings, stud or hoop, are usually recommended for the upper ear.

The third, a far less common, type of ear piercing available is done at the little cartilage tab in front of the ear canal. This area is known as the concha and is on the more painful side to have pierced. It also takes much more time to heal than a lower lobe piercing.

Nose
Nose piercing is also a very popular form of body modification for both men and women. The outer nostril is the most commonly pierced area. This area is cartilage rich and can be painful to pierce. Nose piercings are far more prone to infection than ear piercings and take longer to heal. Large, medium or small, stud or ring, you can wear anything in a nostril piercing.

The less common area for a nose piercing is straight through the tiny bit of flesh and cartilage between the front of your nostrils. Piercing this area, the septum, is often referred to as a bull ring piercing. Large, medium or small, rings are usually preferred to studs for septum piercings. A septum piercing usually heals much quicker than a nostril one.

Tongue
Tongue piercing may be despised by most dentists, but it’s definitely popular in common culture. The tongue is almost always piercing in the middle with a tongue barbell. While many refer to the barbell as a tongue ring, the term is very misleading, as the actual shape usually resembles a thick stick with a ball at each end.

Eyebrow
Eyebrow piercing tends to come in and out of fashion frequently for both men and women. The piercing is usually done on the outer brow, though the inner brow is certainly possible. Smaller studs and rings are usually used for eyebrow piercing. The lack of cartilage in the eyebrow area makes this one of the less painful piercings to have performed.

Belly button
Belly button piercing tends to be seen on more females than males, but is still a popular form of body modification. The fleshy area makes this a slightly less painful area to have pierced, but the location makes it take awhile to heal. Many types of body jewelry can be used with belly button piercings, medium or small, stud or ring.
