People keep telling me there is very little money to me made blogging, but I still want to give it a try. I will be starting a Health/Nutrition information and news blog (a subject I am passionate and knowledgeable in). I have no experience blogging and would like to hear from people with experience. my goals are not that high, after 4 months of blogging I would like to be making at least $100/month. Where is the best place to start blogging?

You said that you want to blog about health/nutrition to earn some extra cash. Blogging is not your only option. If you are an expert on a given topic here are a few ways to make some cash.

You can use a hosted blog service such as WordPress or BlogSpot or Tumblr. A hosted blog service is where they maintain the blog and all you do is focus on updating your blog with content. Be sure to add Google AdSense to your blog because that is how you will make money. It is a good idea to buy your own domain name so that your visitors go directly to your website (http://myhealthsite.com) and not to WordPress (http://myhealthsite.wordpress.com). This gives you the flexibility to change blog software at a later date without losing traffic.

If you juat want to make cash, I also recommend using expert exchange social media sites such as Mahalo, Associated Content, or Squidoo. These sites pay your for content by sharing their ad revenue. As you know, you can manage pages on Mahalo and you can make some money that way. With Associated Content you can write 400 word articles and make money up front for that article plus get performance pay. These sites basically share ad revenue with you for the content you create.

It is important to remember with all these sites that you need to promote your content. WordPress will not necessarily promote your site in any way. The positives of using Mahalo and Associated Content is that your content is integrated with all of the articles they host so it is easily discoverable. The more traffic you bring to your content, the more revenue you will earn. The problem using expert exchange sites like these is that you are do all this work to drive traffic to these sites and not your site!

WordPress is the best place to start blogs. Set it up then get you an awesome domain name and direct it to your blog. What makes WP so great is the fact that is has no many tools and plug ins. You can find numerous tutorials online to learn to automate your blog. (Update it automatically daily without getting online.)

Wordpress is a big one. Sometimes adding clean, healthy banner ads to your blog can add "pay per click" to your $ earned.

Blogspot is the best place to start. Their are so many features that I personally enjoy on this site like:

-The Google Toolbar has a feature called "BlogThis!" which allows toolbar users with Blogger accounts to post links directly to their blogs.
- Blogger supports Google's AdSense service as a way of generating revenue from running a blog.
-Blogger offers multiple author support, making it possible to establish group blogs.
-Blogger offers a template editing feature, which allows users to customize the Blogger template.

If you need tips on blogging here is a wonderful site called tips-for-new-bloggers (which the link is below). It will teach you how to change your web template, use html, use google adsense and more tips and tricks.

For free templates their is a great site called Blog Spot Template (website link below)

Here are some other blog host websites to consider:

Wordpress
Blog.ca

Good Luck on your health blog!

If you want to get a lot of traffic and make good money, you are best getting your own URL and then working hard doing SEO to get good search engine results. Other than that, if you want a free blog, try blogger.com you can monetize your blog there with adsense. A lot of other free blog sites won't let you monetize your blog unless you pay extra.

Check out www.bodyspace.com

It is not a full fledged blog but it does allow you to track ALL of your fitness related stuff. And they do have a blog-like section too.

You can not really make money from this option (well I am not sure if you can) but I would definitely incorporate this into your blogging!

There are two options to start a blog. Either using a free blog host (like Blogger) or host a blog by yourself.

If you are serious about blogging, confident that you will have a certain success on it and want to have a professional image, by all means, avoid the free hosts. Free blog hosts are crowded with low quality blogs that it might not be as easy to convince readers that you are serious.

If you don't mind investing some money on it, I suggest subscribing to a web host (start small, you can always upgrade later), then host WordPress on it. Most popular blogs are using self-hosted WordPress, and it's proven to be one of the best blogging platform ever.

There are a lot (I mean a lot!) of free themes, premium themes, or you can even hire a designer for a customized design, easily, as there are a lot of WordPress theme designers out there.

There are also a lot of plugins that can be used to enhance your blog and make things a whole lot easier. Contact form in just a click, spam comments protector, just anything you could think off.

First, decide where your visitors will likely be from. If you are from Country A, and you guess most of your visitors will be from the same country, then get a host from that country itself. This way your blog will load faster to them.

Read this to learn how to choose a web host - http://www.dailyblogtips.com/how-to-choose-a-web-host

Most web host do have some sort of "one-click install" for WordPress, saving you all the hassle to install it manually.

Conclusion - Get a free blog host if you just want to try blogging and see if you would get bored of it. Some people can write passionately for the first week but abandon their blog in the second week. If you go for a paid host, all your money will be wasted.

If you are determined and willing to invest, get a good web host and use WordPress (http://wordpress.org). That's the most popular blogging platform, you can't go wrong using it.

All the best pal :)

Today.com is the best place for someone to start they provide you with a domain and template. They also pay you for unique views. And to my knowledge I don't believe they have a health blog yet, if they do they need more of them. it's like a blogging network, super easy to join.

Lots of people have mentioned Wordpress.com.

The plain fact is you can't put ads on a blog there, so if your aim was to make money, that is not even an option. You could host a a Wordpress-driven site yourself, or it you want a no-cost solution try Blogger.

If you're willing to spend money, and want less tech hassle than you might get from self-hosting Wordpress, another option is Squarespace.

Whatever you do, making $100 per month from blogging, esp after just 4 months at it, is a very steep target. Such estimates as I've seen suggest that the average serious blogger only makes around $200 a year.

If you after hearing that you still want to try to make money from blogging, I recommend having a look around this site:

http://www.problogger.net/

You'll find lots of tips about everything you need to know, including where to blog, which is what you asked.

However, an esp important article for you to look at is this:

A reality check on blogging for money

I’ve run many polls here at ProBlogger on how much people are earning ... and on every single occasion they reveal that the vast majority of bloggers are making very little per month....

ok. here's the secret to making money on the web: listening?

CONTENT.

$100 a month, huh?.. been there. Hit it in 6, but I had a niche and had content. I also found an area (BD Kwikset locks) that NO one had mentioned.
http://www.bestkeylesslocks.com
which is currently in disrepair and needs attention, but still gets views and still makes something everyday...

Find a niche, get rich. If you have too small of a niche, you don't have the traffic you need to get the clicks. To general of a topic, you probably won't have the horsepower to compete with the big players, so you site will rank low and therefore not get traffic.

Content is king here on the net. One page won't make you any money.

I use Wordpress.org (Wordpress.com is a hosted solution and very limited)
Get a good webshost. I like Godaddy.com.
Here's how to set it up with GoDaddy:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/from-twitter/does-anyone-else-have-problems-with-installing-wordpress-on-godaddy-com

Find a clean theme. Not too cluttered, but not too simple either. There's also a fine line here. Here's a nice site for themes:
http://www.wpthemedesigner.com/
These are monetized for good Banner Ad and adsense Integration.

With Wordpress you'll need a couple of plugins: Something to manage your ads (like Adsense or Adbrite) http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advertising-manager/
and a Google Analytics Plugin.

Also put Feeburner on your site and thing about a free email newsletter or pdf ebook. These work to remind people of your site and help draw new clicks.

Sign up for Google Adsense, https://www.google.com/adsense/ and a couple of other PPC publisher companies. I use Commission Junction, http://www.cj.com/ but there are others and I've been out of the game too long to tell you which ones though sorry.

After you've got the site up and have it populated with content, start marketing it: http://www.deepfriedwebdesign.com/51-ways-to-market-your-website.html

After a couple of weeks take a look at your traffic reports/analytics and your ppc publsiher reports and find out whats working and making you money. Stop doing whats not working and focus on what is working. Do not waste a lot of time on something that doesn't make you money.

As for that magic word CONTENT, make sure an add a new post once or twice a week. Try to keep it on the same day so it looks orgranized and structured. You don't have to write it then, WP offers a feature to publish at set time date.. People like new stuff and engaging new content keeps them coming back..

Keep yourself up to date on not just your subject, but SEO, SEM and PPC:
http://www.seobook.com
http://www.shoemoney.com
http://www.problogger.net/
http://www.wolf-howl.com/

Thats it in a nutshell. It's not easy, and its a LOT of work. Once again make sure and you have LOTS of content, more content means more pages means more places for ads.. Its hard work just to make $100 a month, checking stats, blogging, tweaking, social networking, etc.. Its fun though..

Thanks for the reminder, I hadn't thought about some of this stuff in a while.. Gotta go build another site now...

Good luck!
