The answer to this question really depends on your readers.

You really need to think about who they are, what they want, what their motivations are and what will add to the content of your website rather than simply advertise products or services.

Google Adsense is popular and effective because it is "contextually based". Google looks at what's on your page and then serves up ads based on what you're talking about. There are a variety of ad networks that do the same thing with a variety of results.

You can learn about Affiliate Marketing here:

And you can view a non-biased list of affiliate programs here:

Overall, the only way to ensure that your users are happy and that your ads are productive is by carefully monitoring clicks, views and conversions. Most professional bloggers spend a significant amount of their time reviewing the effectiveness of their ads and either automatically or manually changing the ads on their pages to ensure that they garner the best results.

Thanks for your answer! I definitely think that contextualized affiliate ads are probably the way to go, especially for my relatively small readership.

I recommend going onto the following google adsense site. They have a list of hints on how to put ad colors that comply with their policies.

When you put ads up for the first time, put ads on your site slowly, in a span of one week or so. That way the ads don't suddenly feel extremely obtrusive. Also, try to get the color palette to match your site.

I also recommend looking at sites that you visit frequently, such as this site. Ask yourself, Why aren't the ads on this site obtrusive? Why do they seem to blend in?

I will answer your question honestly but please do not be offended. I have visited your blog and it seems that you do not have enough visitors to get what you want. Before putting advertisements in your blog, be sure that you already have large amount of traffic or regular visitors. If your blog is new and you put so much ads which are annoying for your visitors, they will not return to your blog. To gain a lot of readers and visitors, your blog must be neat and clean. Why not consider changing the template of your blog? try a clean template or choose a free blogger template from this site: http://blogger-templates.blogspot.com/

I am extremely happy with Text Link Ads. They index my blog at http://veraperez.com and sell words within individual posts, based on Alexa rankings. I get half of whatever the client pays per word, and a Wordpress plugin takes care of replacing the purchased word with a link. No popups, no spyware, no flash, just a plain HTML link. I have used them for a little over a year and they have never failed to pay me (Pay Pal) on the first of every month, and it quickly adds up. Google has never paid me in over 5 years using AdSense because they pay per click, while Text Link Ads/Inlinks pays per placement.

They also have conventional text ads, but I really like the way their inlinks text ads program works for me.

Google ads are great but keep them low key (like text only or even simple links, especially at first - as has been said before). Use channels to monitor clicks.

Also in affiliates keep in mind Amazon as they sell a lot of stuff, some of which could be relevant to your blog (Amazon also do contextual search options like Google adwords do).

Put ads on the site for deep dark roasted coffee, like Taster's Choice.

Just kidding! I have the same problem. I hope someone has a good answer. My sites are kind of cheapened by the AdSense and affiliate ads. I wish I could get a foundation grant to do what I do for free...Heck I kind of have that arrangement already, but I need some more...

One word of advice is to use affiliates programs of companies or products you like or support in your site. Affiliate programs are set up by companies to give you a percentage of the sales from users that originate on your site. Your viewers click on the affiliate ads that you have added to your site. The affiliate programs give you the code for the banners and the links that keep track of your referrals.

These affiliate ads can make you as much as AdSense ads if not more. Many, many companies have affiliate programs or work through affiliate clearinghouse companies. Heck Google even has an affiliate program. Look for affiliate programs in the small type at the bottom or top of your favorite companies.
