How could we increase visibility to our new site "MyPax.com" launched last August?
Since we launched, we are doing some SEO on non-competitive keywords. We have not got the big splash from any blog or news outlet, nor are we on Page 1 of major search engines for competitive keywords. Here are the statistics for the last 4 months.
Total uniques visitors: 1114
Total users signed up: 114 ; others unable to sign up due to activation mail going to Spam: 38
Bounce rate: 70%
Avg time on site: 2.15 mins
Pageviews: 2.6
Please help us. Thanks a lot for your time.

Its an interesting site, especially for someone like me who has just relocated to a new city.
The most useful thing you can do to increase your visibility is to increase the quality of your website.
When I fist land on the index page for mypax.com I was very confused. A simple landing page is good, but your page is lacking a bit in this respect. I would suggest that under each tag line on the left, add a bit more information about what they mean. I still don't know what "Be a guru and get noticed" means.
The site tour also has similar problems. I don't understand what is going on. There needs to be more text to give me clues as to what I am doing or need to do.
Right now, even if you do manage to get traffic to your website, they likely wont stay as long as you might want and they probably will not tell their friends about it, and that's a problem. Get some more content. I like the idea though!
So, once you get the site cleaned up a bit what can you do?
You have talked about SEO and that's key. Here is a blog that has a lot of info on SEO:http://www.seomoz.org/blog
One problem you are facing is that you don't have enough text right now to keyword target properly if you add some more text, you will be able to keyword target better.
Depending on who you ask, another, bigger thing is outside links pointing to your site. You want other, highly ranked, similar sites to point to yours. This is easier said than done, but it should happen. If you have any connections with bigger sites, use them to get links.
Some other, more creative ways to drive traffic might be advertising with people who provide services to the same audience you are targeting. I see that you are advertising services to help people moving into a town find others to do activities with. So what about getting local moving companies to distribute material with your website? What about targeting a college campus during the first semester of a year? These would both be ways to target a specific audience who could use your services.
In marketing this is key. Identify who you are marketing to with ever piece of marketing material. Give them a name, a location, a job etc. Don't design your marketing for "A single who is new to town" it wont get you noticed. Instead market to Sally Johnson, a 26 year old woman who just got a new low level management job at Nike and had to move across the country to get it. She is single and is an active runner... the more detailed the better.
Another tricky part with networking sites is they only work if there are other people to network with. So you will want to focus on a specific geographic area. Pick a college campus, or a part of town first. Get users who will actually be able to connect with each other. Once people begin having positive experiences they will tell their friends or blog about it, then you will get more traffic and the pattern will continue.
Another option is to launch affiliate programs. Pay others to refer new members to your site. The more material you can give them to do this for you the better. Its often looked down on as something just for internet pornography sites, but its much much larger than that. Take Amazons system for example: https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/
I hope these ideas help you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

saswata, biggest mistake entrepreneurs make is trying to push a new media concept the same way you push coke or cigarettes. The new market is suspicious of marketing and hate anything that resembles a pitch. So.. just build good will. Teach. Educate. Produce videos that create good will in the community. TRY NOT to get people to use your site. Then they will return your good will by using your site.

I would improve the design of your site. It's pretty good but doesn't have cuddly design kind of thing you might see in another Web 2.0 site. Basically I think this means making the site visually appealing to a 2-5 year old. That silly statement might be the design principle behind many Web 2.0 sites.

Ask people who are signed up to tell other people about your website. Send them each a personalized e-mail and tell them how it would just be great if they could tell their friends about it. Or you could hire one of those companies who can help you by flooding the internet with good stuff about you so that you show up more often.
Short answer:
With a site like that, you need to give a brief summary on the home page about the aims of the site, written in a way that is meant to sound appealing.
But like with all industry, it's all about:
advertising, advertising, advertising!
and that goes extra for the purposes of your site. I would focus the advertising on other websites, affiliates, and search engines.
Good luck!
