Most pet blogs have funny content. Just like what our beloved pets do to us, pet blogs posts something funny so people would love visiting their page always.
Aside from funny content, post pictures. Tons of them! You can also post videos of your pet doing something fun and interesting.
The key to having a successful pet blog is by means of advertising your site. Visiting other blogs and sites, commenting on them or leaving your link will make others visit you too. Create a twitter account for this blog too. Follow people and always post something on it.
Get a cbox too or a shoutmix. This will enable other visitors to leave you messages! It's a great way to meet other bloggers here too. I have cbox on my blog and it helped a lot on getting people to visit my site. You can get either of the two from here:

Here are some successful pet blogs I always visit... Try to check them for you to gain tips and ideas so your pet blog will do good too. :)

Good Pictures! The spiders made me a little jumpy actually.
Add how to video links if possible. Make this page as jam packed with quality information as possible. Start with one animal, write all you know about it and promote it on digg, facebook, twitter, myspace, hoverspot, and any other social sites that come to mind.
Write an article about the featured animal and submit it to AC using the blog as a reference for more information. Ask pet forums to link back to your site in exchange for a blog mention.
Just a few things off the top of my head....Good luck with the new venture!
One note...I was not too impressed with the twitter links not being related to the animals. At first glance, the only thing that tells the viewer the page is about animals is the title and what you wrote as the intro. jmo

One way is to network with other bloggers within your niche (exotic pets) and see if they would like to do a link exchange or you could trade off guest posts.
Additionally, you could submit your website to social bookmarking websites such as Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit.
Always remember that quality content is very important. If you create great posts, people will help promote your website because they will feel the need to tell others.

First, social bookmarking. Google likes it when they see a website that other people are linking to. That's one of the things in their "secret formula" that gets pages ranked and spidered rather quickly.
Now, there are "do follow" bookmarking sites, and "no follow" sites, which don't promote links. www.socialbookmarker.com is a great place to see a list of do follow bookmarks. If you sign up for the websites, you can choose which one's you want to submit your link too, and do it all from their page. It's worth checking out. I have used it many times.
As far as keyword density, this means using one keyword phrase in virtually every page you write. You say your website is on exotic pets, so I would focus on several keyword phrases and may even include exotic pets. If you don't know much about keyword density, you should try:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyword_density
http://entrepreneursolutions.blogspot.com/2009/09/understanding-keyword-density.html
Make sure people are searching for your keyword phrase. Using the tool called Keyword Tracker (this is the free version) @ http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/
lets you know how many people are searching for your keywords per day.
Also don't forget to check with Google search engines to see how many people already have indexed pages. Your aim is less than 500,000 results.
Don't forget to check Google Adwords Keyword tool to let you know how much ads are paying for your keyword phrase. Just type the phrase in the box and it will tell you the amount.
Finally, quality content. Content really is king on the net. Write to your audience. What are they looking for? Possibly a solution to some problem? Products? Etc?
After you've been blogging awhile, I would ad a product from Commission Junction, or another site that allows you to put a product to sell on your page. If it sells, they offer you commission. Don't forget the main thing is to build an audience first. Readers want to develop a connection with you, before they trust you to tell them what they should buy.
Good Luck!

Funny content idea - great! Photos? Just need to make sure I don't duplicate them on Mahalo. Didn't know we could set up separate Twitter accounts...I put a Twitter link on the blog. I will archive all of this. Thanks so much!!

Hi, and thanks. I linked all my Mahalo pages, which contain the How Tos and the How To Videos. I've been cautioned never to repeat Mahalo text elsewhere, hence all the links. AC = ? Good idea on the pet forums. Using that ploy on twitter, which I clearly do not know how to link exclusively to my animal stuff, so I get the entire twitter feed. Sheesh! New territory, so thanks for all the pointers!

The first time I made a blog was with blogger on google its a great site with all the features you need. This site allows you to upload text pictures and even videos. This site gives you your own URL or in other words your very own website. The best part is its free.

Did you take a peek at the blog in question? It's on blogspot.com. Do you think that was a bad choice? Twitter is linked and runs along the right side. Thanks for the tip regarding wefollow.com

I'm new at twitter so please share if these techniques work for you:
I checked out your blog and your tweets. I think you may want to start a twitter account that is specifically for the web site. Have at 1 to 3 daily fact messages that include #hastags. Some recommended #hastags would be #pets, #boas, #turtles, #frogs and the like. Make each tweet include a tiny URL to the appropriate post on you blog where followers can get more information. Register the exotic pets twitter account using the #hashtags that best represent your blog. This will help get more twitter followers and blog traffic.
The tweets on your personal twitter account are written more for people who want to know you on a personal level. Tweets to promote a blog or web page/site are targeted to draw in readers.
Here are the tweets I sent last week. They are tied to my Mahalo pages. Even with just a handful of followers, I saw an increment in page traffic following the tweets.
