Even though the exact reason is not yet known, recent research suggests that the main reason is food security. Most birds migrate from areas that are support little fruits or or other foods during winter, and by moving to warmer areas, their basic food supply is more secure, thereby allowing them to have a better chance at survival.
Even more recent studies (published this week in Europe) even indicates that many birds don't migrate as far south as they used to, because there are nearer locations that are warm enough to have continuous food supplies.

The reasons are complex and not fully understood. But a simple explanation is food and a safe place to breed. Birds which breed in the summer in the extreme north such as the Arctic benefit from an abundance of food as plants and insect life flourish in the long daylight hours; (took from 2nd link, see for more info, u will find even more links there!) The reasons are complex and not fully understood. But a simple explanation would be for food.Food scarcity is the number one reason that predict a species migratory behavior. Food availability is the underlying process not diet and habitat.Another reason for migration is a safe place is that birds need a safe place to breed. Some birds fly thousands of miles between South America, Central America and canada because they need a place to stop, eat and rest. Some birds begin migrations early in july and other species distinct southward movement cannot be detected until winter.
