It depends on how your car reacts to biodiesel, what kind of weather
you run it in, etc. You have to do some
research on your specific car, try a few things and make your own
decision.

In my case, I found I had to do absolutely nothing to convert my car for biodiesel, even for winter use.

This reference is clearly not to biodiesel at all, but straight vegetable oil with paint thinner added. This opinion and reference is contrary to that of virtually all biodiesel references and forums. Beware!

If you currently have a gas-burning engine, you will need a to replace it with a diesel engine. If you currently have a diesel engine, you can burn biodiesel.

However, most manufacturers will only warranty their diesel engines for small percentage mixes of biodiesel, such as 5% or 15% in the US.

If you already have a diesel engine, then you can theoretically run biodiesel, but I recommend that you buy a converter kit like the ones available at http://www.greasecar.com/. Biodiesel needs to be heated to thin it before it can function properly in a diesel engine, and these kits solve this problem by allowing you to switch between diesel and biodiesel. You start and stop your engine on diesel and only run the engine on biodiesel when it is warm.

This answer has biodiesel and vegetable oil confused. The kits are for vegetable oil not biodiesel.

I have found a host of useful online resources that should point you in the general direction on the technologies available for converting a regular car to run on bio diesel, do have a look at them but for starters your engine should be the type that uses diesel to facilitate transition to bio diesel since the technology does not run for a regular gasoline car. The ehow article is a pretty concise step by step guide on how to achieve this, thumb through the rest t get to know the technology better I hope you find this information helpful.
