Best places to donate to charity with no money?
(As usual I reserve the right to sprinkle answers with tips if I so choose, and you are welcome to do that too)
1. Mahalo is an answers community, knowledge sharing place, search engine, with How To pages and writers and so on where you can EARN MAHALO DOLLARS that can be exchanged for real money minus 25% admin fee for earnings over $125. However if you look at How Mahalo Works and DO earn even $25 you can then buy a $25 donation to 4 major charities and probably more once the store is older - it just opened - with NO ADMIN FEE CHARGED (folks using it said that was so). So, instead of Farmville or other places strictly for fun, you can earn your annual charity donations here and free up that money for whatever else you wish, or increase your ability to function without extra money in these poor economic times. The link to their bookstore with the charities is: http://www.mahalo.com/store/ and the current charities are Unicef, Kiva, Care, and American Red Cross.
2. How to Volunteer and How to Take a Volunteer Trip introduce you to the concept of donationg your valuable TIME to a charity. There are almost infinite numbers of charities needing help and working virtually online from home in some tasks has widened the access to such opportunities even more as you are able to work on your own schedule. Examples of religious based charities that need online prayer volunteers with full training provided is with Oral Roberts Ministries, see Mahalo page Lindsay Roberts for detail about their ministry and also Crossroads Canada runs prayer lines, see 100 Huntley Street and Nite Lite Live for information about shows they sponsor that feature the prayer lines on them. Both organizations serve North America and the world. Of course local churches and religious organizations likely need help also as they often sponsor services like Food Banks where many volunteers are needed. Some people donate
items to charities that help others and have volunteers in them, such as donating a car or SUV or van that they don't need any more. Here is a page about that here: How to Donate a Car in Missouri I accidentally heard on a TV show about them looking for a donation of a vehicle at http://www.revival.com now so check it out if that interests you. I think that would give you a tax deduction if it is for a registered charity but check on that, not sure - sometimes that helps you EARN money, if the item is not needed and you get a tax deduction against income you have earned that has tax paid on it and you get that money back.

I volunteer 3 days a week between 1 and 4 hours a day at a The Upper Room Compassionate Ministries in my hometown. We provide fresh food and meat, canned food, bread, sandwiches, and hot meals to hungry people, homeless and with homes, anyone who needs a helping hand with food we will help them. We also provide good "job seeking" clothing for adults, clothing for children from newborns to adults, diapers and formula, toothpaste and toilet paper, small appliances and furniture, winter jackets and warm blankets, etc.etc., and everything we give has been donated to us by the community. We really help people.
I spend most of my time there sorting through or finding people to help me sort through the hundreds of donations we receive a day, people will donate just about anything. Yesterday a young couple dropped off a nice working washer and dryer set for us to find a good home for. This kind of really sweet donation is not common but we do get quite a few stellar donations a week and we give them away as we get them, our inventory is always changing. We get more furniture than we can give away. Thank you to everyone. :)
So the best places are right in your neighborhood, you can "Bloom Where You Are Planted" and do the best job and be the most help if out take the time to find out where in your own community needs your help and give to that area your time and efforts. Especially if you are a professional of any sort, smaller community charitable organizations always need an accountant, a salesman, a lawyer, a web developer, a scientist, a doctor, a construction worker, a auto repair specialist, a public relations professional, and every other skill or set of skills out there are in great need by local organizations. Usually these services are beyond the economic reach of the charities.. by donating these professional services you are really saving the day.
Help out the neighborhood you live in first and then expand out to other neighborhoods, if everyone did 3 -5 hours a week in their own community we really could make the world a better place one person, one community at a time and maybe just save the world.
Edit ~ yes it is true the dollars we donate through the Mahalo Store are dollar for dollar. A M$25 Mahalo Dollar donation is a $25 US Dollar donation, so it is kind of poetic that the way to get the MOST value from your Mahalo Dollars is to GIVE them to someone else in need.

M$Thank you for doing your part to help take care of our foster children!
As a CASA Volunteer and a Foster Parent here in Carson City, I applaude your response!
I wanted to mention how impressed I was with the Salvation Army in my area. My Mom's therapist let me know I could not help her financially or physically anymore because I was enabling her, and not letting her hit rock bottom with her disease and therefore I was hurting Mom more than helping. I will not get into how very hard that is, to watch a loved one hit rock bottom. I did make sure Mom went to every appointment with the treatment facility and they brought Mom to the salvation Army, which hands out food weekly to people who need it. They offered her plenty of food and even paid for a hotel for Mom until we could get her placed in the facility she is in now.
Not only did they help her with food and money, they helped her gracefully. They did not look down on the many people in the same boat as Mom. They were focussed not only on "Today" but helping people get their lives back.
I can not say how impressed I am with the salvation Army. Not only can you volunteer money or clothing to donate, but you can volunteer your time, and put a smile on people's faces they may have thought all hope was gone. here is a link to the Salvation Army. There may even be more ways to help than I know of. www.salvationarmyusa.org/
Thank you for such a wonderful question!

M$You could also become a volunteer at a disabled school, old folks home and so many other places.
If you've got old clothes, or toys to spare, donate it to a good cause, such as Toys for Tots. Or cook a bit extra and find a homeless guy, give him a hot dinner. You could even help by organizing events and donation drives. Maybe become a foster parent for a foreign exchange student. The main things most charities need is both time, manpower and financial support.

M$Wow, that is really interesting! I had never seen that site before,
I take it that excerpt must have come from
http://www.createthegood.org/ by changing the location to the one you want,
and pressing the "Find Good Things to Do" option?
That is so cool! Thanks! Looks like that is for the United States
For Canada I think a similar site with even more charity options is this one:
http://www.charityvillage.com/
I don't know if this included in what you are looking for, but I am suggesting this site(Care2), to enable to donate without money, I like this site: http://www.care2.com/. You can help children, women, the poor, to cure diseases, the animals, the environment and a lot more beneficiaries of your donation just by clicking to donate.
Also, thanks to Mahalo for including donation feature in the Mahalo Store, great.

M$I had this link in one of my emailed news updates - looks like it could help determine who is financially a good bet or not:
The 20 best money Web sites
These sites have tools you can trust to help you make better money decisions.
20 of 20
20. Should I give to this charity?
Best Site: http://www.Charitynavigator.org
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2010/moneymag/1002/gallery.Best_money_websites.moneymag/20.html
There are some websites that devote themselves to debunking false claims on the internet. One that I rely on a lot is Snopes.com but they don't have anything about the Animal Rescue Site on their site.
However Hoax-Slayer does have the info and they claim that the site is legit. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/animal-rescue-site-email.shtml
I agree about trusting your intelect and I do prefer to volunteer personally when I can.

M$The second way to donate to charity is by helping out at food banks or cafeterias for the the homeless. Though this method does not require any input from the person, it is also a way to help others around you through volunteer working. Personally, I've tried this method by helping out at a food bank during the thanksgiving season. This type of charity is like any other, because though you are not necessarily giving, you still receive that smile on someone's face when you give them the chance to eat.
The last form of charity I can think of would be a Good Will or Salvation Army donation of clothing or other things such as furniture or books that are useless to you. By giving these items to these charities, you are giving back to your community, and not spending a dime doing it, for you are getting rid of unwanted clutter, and at the same time giving back to those in need. This is another method I've embarked on, as I am a donator to Good Will charities. By doing this I'm removing the unwanted items from my home, and giving it to people in need, so it's all for a good cause.

M$While the other answers are good, consider doing internet searches through Goodsearch.com.
Many needy organizatiosn register and for every search that is done for legitimate reasons, the charity or organization receives a check every month.
Another option, while not many deserving people can become foster parents, or do work through other methods, consider doing a random act of kindness.
If you dont have any money period and we have all been there at one point or another, but you have physical resources like a lawn mower, clippers for hedges etc. consider mowing a persons lawn if they can't.
Charity doen't not have to be large or monetary. Giving of yourself is charitable contributions. You literally can drop a dime in a march of dimes envelop and mail it.
Save box tops or lables for charities.
You can go online and look for " volunteer online", charities and groups use people to do all sorts of small things.
Read to kids at the library once a week, volunteer for boys and girls clubs, become a Big Brother or Big Sister Mentor, The options are open, you need only be creative.
