A 300 watt electric bike (or Moped as it is classed) provides a viable alternative to the car. In Jul 2009, new rules had been passed that regardless of KW rating or electric or petrol that they were classed as Moped, and therfore must be registered and abide by all rules pertaining to motorcycles inlcuding an approved motorvcycle helmet.
In the USA and Canada, the maximum power permitted to comply with the Federal low-power electric bicycle law is 750W. The maximum permitted speed is 20 mph. In Canada, the maximum permitted power is 500W. The maximum speed is 20 mph. Neither country requires licensing,registration, or insurance.
