M$If you ever have to take your project to a studio this is what most audio engineers use. I learned the hard way by starting out using Digital Performer (MOTU)
Audacity is a good open source audio editor (although it still crashes enough to make me crazy)
My main complaint with Pro Tools is that you have to use their hardware which is pretty expensive, but I the gap between the stability and features of Pro Tools and Audacity is still too big for me.

M$Pro Tools is NOT free and DOES NOT come with a new system. Pro Tools is outside the standard package of applications you get from Apple when you buy a new system. Shame on you for suggesting it was.
