What are your favorite eighties movies?

There were actually a bunch of really good/popular movies from the 80's - which ones were your favorite? The decade was marked with hits like The Princess Bride, The Karate Kid, Dirty Dancing, Gremlins, Top Gun, Ghostbuster, Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club ... and the list goes on. What were your favorite flicks from this colorful, and often cheesy, decade?

Okay, so many of my cheesy favorites have been mentioned. (But I can’t say The Princess Bride is cheesy – it’s a classic! I do have enough presence of mind to be embarrassed by my one-time fascination with Lost Boys, though.)

Let me just add some flicks from others genres that are faves, but most of them with a low Velveeta content. (Although I couldn’t help including a few films of questionable value.)

The Elephant Man (1980)
Raging Bull (1980)
Escape from New York (1981)
Evil Dead 1 (1981)
Heavy Metal (1981)
Blade Runner (1982)
Pink Floyd The Wall (1982)
Tron (1982)
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
Blood Simple (1984)
Terminator (1984)
Brazil (1985)
Blue Velvet (1986)
Highlander (1986)
Die Hard (1988)
Heathers (1988)
Batman (1989)

Oh, and I have to include some comedies:
Airplane (1980)
Polyester (1980)
Caddyshack (1980)
The Blues Brothers (1980)
Stripes (1981)
Time Bandits (1981)
National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
This is Spinal Tap (1984)
Back to the Future (1985)
Ferri Bueller’s Day Off 1986)
Spaceballs (1987)
The Little Mermaid (1989)

We have plenty of strong nominees out there but 2 of the best action movies of ALL time came out in the 80's, Die Hard and Predator. The still hold up so well even today.

Perhaps not the first filmmaker you'd associate with the decade, Woody Allen did some of his finest (if lesser known work) in the 1980s, most notably: Zelig (1983), Broadway Danny Rose (1984), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and, one of his all-time best and my personal favorite of his from any decade, Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), which stars Allen and Martin Landau and features memorable performances by Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston, and Sam Waterston.

I was just a kid...who the hell took me to all these movies? hahaha. Thanks Grandma!!

LOVE John Carpenter movies and still do. Also any of the 80s teen movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and anything with John Cusack in it. Not that radio over the head one, too mushy.

Add any movie with Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Robots (robocop for sure), Aliens, and anything that showed even a slight glimpse of breasts and I was all over it.

The THING!!! That movie was genius!! Scared the pants off of me!!
Good selections!
Btw - When I found out my girlfriend loved the movie Aliens, I knew I was going to marry her.
And I did. We both recite lines to each other all the time!
