The way I see it the reason people find it hard to apologize is based on fear. We call it Pride, ego, etc., however, I think the real culprit is that we are afraid (I mean people that have this problem are afraid 8~) ). We are afraid of being rejected, of having the truth being held over our heads, of looking stupid, of being called names. The list of course could go on and on.
I have found that as I have gotten older, it is more important to be true to myself, my family, and my friends and not put up that false front. To go through the fear and apologize when I am wrong. Having honest, open relationships is much more important to me today then my EGO! The more I have accepted myself and admitted my faults, the more I accept other people. Now it is alright for me to be wrong, to make a mistake, to be different. More importantly these things don't bother me in other people anymore. Life is a lot calmer and peaceful. It has become a "we world" rather then an "I world".
Today when I need to apologize, I say:

Of course, there are others who just have massive egos and twist any situation to have the conclusion they want. In their eyes, they are never wrong. It's always the fault of the other party.
The worst offenders are the ones who only refuse to apologize to those they think are beneath them. I suppose this is a mix of a superiority complex and ego.

Personally, I think it is a complicated issue that is different for everyone. Some people find it hard to apologize because they are too prideful. The thought of admitting culpability even when it is obvious they are wrong is just impossible for them. To them, it is like showing weakness which leads to vulnerability. Of course, there are others who just have massive egos and twist any situation to have the conclusion they want. In their eyes, they are never wrong. It's always the fault of the other party.

Yes you're right. It's their pride and ego. People usually don't want to lower themselves. They always wanted to have a good image so that people would look up on them, so that people will admire them and won't take advantage of them if they'll be too submissive.

Yes it is their ego, which prevents them from apologizing. They think that they would be considered inferior if they apologize. And this is very wrong perception. One should be very humble and honest. And should apologize for any wrong task done intentionally or unintentionally.
