In my opinion a married man would have deep feelings for a woman in his past

1.if he still loves that woman.
2. if he is not deeply in love with his wife.
3. if he married his wife because she looks like that woman from his past.
4. if he was not able to get what he wanted from that woman.
5. if she was a Goddess to him. If, from his point of view, she was the perfect woman.

According to an article I've read at ezinearticles.com, these are the reasons why a man can't forget his past:

---quote---
* according to the psychology of falling in love if the best match mentioned above was found then for any reason the relation was terminated and someone else appeared in his life, he will always be in the mode of comparison between both, and the real problem is when the old one is a better match then the new one, in this case the new one will always lose the comparison and so he will feel that it would have been better if he were still with the old one.

* another major cause is when he just seek someone else to fill the emotional gap that developed after the first break-up, the second person will only be playing the role of a pain killer, she may be someone nice, elegant and so on, but still she is not the one, she is just providing him with the emotional support that he need.

* one very common reason is when the person falls in love with someone who is a little similar to the old one, maybe she looks like her or maybe she talks the same way, whatever the reason is, his subconscious mind just falls in love with the other person because she is similar to the old one and so he unconsciously think that she may provide the same emotional support that the old one used to provide. In that case, comparison happens again and he will find that the old one still wins it.

* abnormal relationship termination is another cause, abnormal relationship termination is when the other partner suddenly disappears, either by cutting down the connection between him and her or by traveling somewhere else and then refusing to talk to him or resume negotiation, in that case he may find himself still attached to her just because he can’t get a hold of her
----end of quote----
