Yes, mercury in fish is absolutely a health concern. For thousands of years, our ancestors have fished these waters and ate the fish and other marine life they caught and now, if we do so we are poisoning ourselves. Talk about a testimony to the times! Testimony that we are NOT headed in the right direction and haven't been ever since the industrial revolution.
According to HLN, the mercury in fish comes mainly from the burning of coal for electricity. Remember, there is no such thing as clean coal and all those advertisements you see, like the lady who doesn't want to lay off an employee if her energy bill goes up, is all just a bunch of brainwashing propaganda. Don't listen to it! Why poison ourselves when we can have clean energy AND put more Americans to work AND stop purchasing fossil fuels from countries who hate us. WHY? Because all those who stand to lose money if this happens are spending millions, no actually billions, of dollars to brainwash Americans into fearing this change.
For the truth, go to www.wecansolveit.org. Incidentally, this is a website geared toward both conservatives and liberals and all in between, so don't think it's some flaky liberal website. This problem belongs to ALL of us and subsequently the solution is the responsibilty of ALL of us. Check it out!

In 2004 a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee established a tolerable intake of 1.6 μg/kg bodyweight per week for methylmercury in order to protect the developing fetus from neurotoxic effects. In 2006, this committee clarified that life-stages other than the embryo and fetus may be less sensitive to the adverse effects of methylmercury. For adults, up to about twice the tolerable intake per week would not pose any risk of neurotoxicity.
The committe of WHO created a list of 8 strategic activites that are needed to achieve elimination of mercury-related diseases. Read the flyer if you are interested.
By the way, it lists dental amalgams used as fillings as being a significant source of mercury poisoning as well.....That makes me wonder if I am carrying around the seeds of my own demise in my mouth.....????

Fish from approximately 300 streams across the country were found to have mercury contamination. About a quarter of the fish tested had mercury levels exceeding that which the EPA says is safe for human consumption.
It has been documented that mercury consumption from fish can damage the nervous system and cause learning disability in young children. More cause for concern.
"This science sends a clear message that our country must continue to confront pollution, restore our nation's waterways, and protect the public from potential health dangers," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement.

Yes. The World Health Organization issued a flyer, entitled "Exposure to Mercury. A World Health Concern," which contributes most of the high mercury levels due to human activity. It ultimately settles in the sediment of lakes, rivers or bays where it is transformed into methylmercury, absorbed by phytoplankton, ingested by zooplankton and fish, and accumulates especially in long-lived predatory species, such as shark and swordfish and in shellfish. In 2004 a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee established a tolerable intake of 1.6 μg/kg bodyweight per week for methylmercury in order to protect the developing fetus from neurotoxic effects. According to a recent federal study of mercury contamination "No fish can escape mercury pollution." That is a scarey enough statement to cause concern.
