Success in life begins with the home and primary caretakers. Most of the influence in developing early habits and character traits happens from birth to age 6.
School is for academic learning, not for developing character traits.
That is the responsibility of the caretakers in the home.
Kids need guidance in life and real life experiences. Step by step, reaching goals, however small, gives them a feeling of success.
They develop self esteem by real life experiences.
This self esteem can be built upon by academic and social experiences in school, and later in the work place.

At home of course, If you are raised to not give to cares as to how you do in school. Then you will never really care (unless you are one of the like 1% that actually are self actualized at a young age).
I think, success begins at home. It begins by the start of the day, having a healthy breakfast, loving caring parents/guardians and every thing at home is the start of success at school.

Children who have parents that are more involved at home tend to be more successful at school.
“Multiple studies have demonstrated that active parent involvement and engagement in their children’s education is the most accurate predictor of student achievement, not family income or socioeconomic status, as many may think."

I would say that success begins at home. The reason is that many kids spends more time at home than at school. In addition to that, and in general, successful kids at school have parents that always help and encourage them.
I know that many advertisements are saying that success begins at school. Honestly, I think that the reason for this is that it is easier to demand teachers and school personnel to help kids to be successful. If you blame the school when kids are not successful, the government has to do something about it. If you blame the parents when kids are not successful, there is not too much the government can do. The government cannot fire a parent because he cannot help their kids with their chemistry homework. The government cannot fire a parent when he cannot help their kids with their French or Italian homework. However, the government can fire a teacher or a school administrator, when they do not offer extra help for students that are not performing at grade level.
