All religion has the potential to be dangerous. Humans have a need to believe in something. Some times these believes take them to dark place. The worst types of wars are done in the name of God.

Or "a" god. Any ideology is dangerous in the hands of a fanatic.

I think Scientology isn't meant to be taken literally. It's possible to benefit from the experience without actually believing aliens sucked souls and live in a volcano. But I'm very Pollyannic about life experiences.

Put me in a room full of crap and I'll find the pony!

(I know this is an old question, but I still want to chime in)

Scientology *IS* dangerous in my opinion

One look at the Lisa McPherson website, or any of Paulette Coopers stories are a key indication.

The biggest mistake Scientology makes is keeping those detailed records that they keep. They have been raided several times and have seen hand written notes in files about what they've done to members trying to leave the church.

Lisa McPherson was trapped for several days in a hotel room in Florida. She told her mother she was coming home, she never made it home.

Paulette cooper had issues with writing a book about the church:

Through the years as she continued to expose the Church, Paulette Cooper was the target not only of litigation but of several harassment campaigns including a Scientology campaign known as Operation Freakout, the goal of which was to deter Cooper from criticism of Scientology by having her "incarcerated in a mental institution or jail or at least to hit her so hard that she drops her attacks."

I know all religions have issues, but none have these type of mafia tactics that I've read about. Things that have been in courts, handwritten notes from L.Ron himself, plenty of proof that this is all a scam.

Harlan Ellison claimed that he was THERE when he L.Ron made up Scientology.

I think it's really important for people to research this before they get involved. There are too many mysterious things going on with this place. They don't want any of their members to see critical things, and even once created a software package that was to be used by all Scientologists which filtered any critical things about Scientology. It was lovingly dubbed by critics as the Scieno Sitter.
