Incidentaly, he also grew and smoked hemp. Yes, George was not only a drinker, but a pothead, too.

You asked for the brewer, however, I would like to point out that most people back then brewed their own beer. In those days, you could find beer brewed by companies, but in the colonies, most people did for themselves or did without and I believe George Washington was no different. Remember, they were in the process back then of building a country from the ground up.

• Porter, from Robert Hare's Brewery of Philadelphia. Something to remember about President Washington.

Just what I asked! And an excellent source. It's Robert Hare not Hair though, according to that source.

According to the link below, Madeira wine was his favorite, however, in his desk was found a recipe for porter beer. Incidentaly, he also grew and smoked hemp. Yes, George was not only a drinker, but a pothead, too.

Washington was a home brewer but even home brewers drink professionally brewed beers when they eat out or go to taverns, as Washington must have frequently done.

I have continued researching related things. Although many people homebrewed, there were many professional brewers throughout the colonies supplying innumerable taverns.

Washington bought porter from the Morris brewery of Philadelphia after Hare's brewery burned down. But I don't see any quotes where he complimented the beer as he did with Hare's.
