Because we have 10 fingers, did all cultures come up with number systems based on ten?
Finger Eleven? Maybe 20 for fingers and toes? I mean, is 10 the number of destiny when it comes to mathematics?

The binary system was used prior to the base 10 system in Eygpt. Also a system of tally marks, where each 'mark' stood for '1' existed before either of those (kind of a base 1 system). Thus /// equals 3 in that system.

I was replying from my iPhone and could not get the source. I got the information from a text book I have. I also saw it on wikipedia and a few other sites. But my source was the textbook.
But I think it this link says the same as my textbook. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numeral_system
In all honesty, I did not have a source as I was just recalling what I learned while getting my degree in Math. I apologize for the confusion and the short answer.
Can you give me a source of that Binary info?
We still use tally, are you sure they didn;t group them like we do? I mean 4 and then a cross hatch?
If you search google for binary number system history, you can find the info. It is also on wikipedia.
My math book from college says that the tally system used before binary or base 10 did not have a cross hatch.
So you are saying if I want an sourced answer, I need to go to google or wikipedia myself and look it up? interesting reply....
