As long as your not in a hurry good old sun bathing does a really good job. I think it's probably the least harmful. Also lemon juice and sun work a little faster.
One site I found recommended...
"Use it on dirty hair, rather than freshly washed hair. That way the oils in your hair will protect it from the drying effects of lemon juice."
