Studies have shown that tea tree oil (melaleuca oil) can kill the herpes viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2 in laboratory cell cultures. Further studies are needed to determine its effectiveness on actual herpes infections, but the research so far is promising. However, tea tree oil is toxic if swallowed, and some people may have an allergic reaction (contact dermatitis) to it, so use some caution if you decide to try using tea tree oil.
