Should I grow a beard?

My best friend and I have discussed a "beard-off." He already has a full beard, but has offered to shave and start over if I were to stop shaving also. Below is a recent picture of me.

I've had one since 1969.

Pros:
- Saves time shaving
- Warm in winter (breaks the breeze)
- Great thing to rub and scratch (especially for the cat)
- Dignified appearance, perhaps, if you or the looker can be led to believe so
- Get it gray or white and you don't have to add much disguise to be Santa Claus, especially if yer a beer drinker

Cons:
- Gets scraggly when long (perhaps not to your taste); requires upkeep, trimming; when shaving, you have to do a bit of "edge" handling'
- Keep it clean (shampoo) else y'll get itchy
- Catches on yer shirt collar; collects cookie crumbs and milk

I'll keep mine, thanks. No one would recognize me without. Even me.

OF COURSE! The gauntlet has been thrown. If you do not want to appear to be a wussy boy, you must take up the challenge.

* I think I'd look better, more handsome, with a beard
* It's the natural thing to do.
* It's the manly thing to do.
* It suits my personality.
* I want to look older.
* I want to look more distinguished.
* Growing a beard is a family tradition.
* It is something that women cannot do.
* I want to express my freedom from social conventions.
*I want to show my friend that I can do it.
*I can't afford razor blades.
*I live like a hermit.
*I like it when people kiss me and say, "ooh that's rough."
*Dipping facial hair into coffee sounds delish.
*I like the Fu Manchu possibilities.
*I want people to describe me as "hirsute" so that I can baffle others.
*Rubbing my chin will make me look smart even though I'm just thinking, "Hey, I'm rubbing my chin and it feels gooooood."

My girlfriend isn't totally thrilled with the idea either, but she said she'd be supportive if I decided to go for it. And now that I have quite a bit of positive feedback from the answers community, she might be a bit more receptive.

You have a good chin, I wouldn't grow a beard if I were you.

In my many years I have had beards, mustaches, and a clean shaven face. The mustaches lasted off and on (mostly on) for 25 years but the beards never lasted more than a month or so.

Beards can itchy and are difficult to keep attractively groomed. They are also less friendly to a woman's face.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am currently clean shaven on both my face and my head.

I think you should as long as you kept it short, and of course it's just hair! If you decide you don't like it shave it off!

No. It will come in all patchy, or at best as a giant chinstrap which will make you look like a grizzled fisherman and require that you start smoking a pipe. I have seen these kinds of beards before on people in their 20s-30s such as yourself. It's not pretty.

If you need to experiment with facial hair, try to perfect the 5 o'clock shadow look.

Also, girls don't like beards.

The Great thing about a beard is that if you don't like it, you can always shave it off.

For inspiration, here are a few beard pics to get you excited about your new look! BTW, the last one is actually a woman...

No. You've got a nice face and good bone structure. Don't cover that up with a beard!

Looking at your stubble in the sample pic, I think you'd be best served with a Van Dyke. If you decide to go with a beard, that is.

A full beard does not look good on most people, and completely trashes your facial structure. A Van Dyke, which is a goatee which grows around the lips and merges with the mustache, is small enough to be manageable and can really fill out a face rather nicely.

I say no. But you knew that already. To address the pros and cons given by fjpoblam...

Pros:
- Saves time shaving
**You sit down when shaving. If you stop shaving, you will lose out on relaxation time.**
- Warm in winter (breaks the breeze)
**You live in Southern CA. You are warm enough.**
- Great thing to rub and scratch (especially for the cat)
**So if you grow this beard, does this mean we can get a cat to scratch it?**
- Dignified appearance, perhaps, if you or the looker can be led to believe so
**You would have to do more than grow a beard to look dignified. Not that looking dignified is necessarily a goal.**
- Get it gray or white and you don't have to add much disguise to be Santa Claus, especially if yer a beer drinker
**We both know it will grow in red, which screams lumberjack, not Santa. And you are definitely not a beer drinker.**

Cons:
- Gets scraggly when long (perhaps not to your taste); requires upkeep, trimming; when shaving, you have to do a bit of "edge" handling'
**You already shave your head to make upkeep easier and you sleep until 10 minutes before you have to leave. So when would the time for upkeep to come in?**
- Keep it clean (shampoo) else y'll get itchy
**You don't wash your hair on a regular basis. Washing a beard? Doesn't seem like it will happen.**
- Catches on yer shirt collar; collects cookie crumbs and milk
**Filth=yuck.**

Couple other notes...you are not a 70s porn star. You DO have a lovely face without a large amount of facial hair. The beard seems like it could be a fire hazard in the kitchen, and you definitely cannot stop cooking. ;) If you try to grow a beard, your cousin will as well. And you will definitely lose that beard-off. So why even try?

xoxo

I think you misunderstand what a beard-off is. The winner is not who can grow it faster or fuller, The winner is the one who shaves last.

Ok, for you, possibly. It will make you appear, with your glasses, bookish and tweedy. More coffee bar than night club.

As for your wager, it's loaded. As it is, he has a head start, and if he shaves, his "full" beard will likely grow back better than yours will come in.

I spend about 3 months bearded, and 3 months off, alternately, for full disclosure. I get sick of shaving, it grows, I get sick of being "bearded", with all the above enumerated trappings, I shave. And yes, they catch fire.

Since you are a man, I would say that it is a good idea, as long as your present significant one, if any, likes it; in support I tell you why, even if I was not an observant Jew, which thank G-d I am, I would still let my face look like Nature meant it to:
1) I gain three working, or loafing minutes, either way useful minutes of my life every day that I don't waste them shaving my face, in forty five years (I quit shaving at 18 based on this consideration, and the religious reasons only became relevant 11 years later) minus the month when I was forced to shave, during the Gulf war, because the Israeli Civil defense had run out of the special gas masks for bearded people before I could get one - I have it now, just in case...) add up to, and minus Shabbatot and Holidays in which I would not shave even if I normally did, add up to more or less (at 8 a day, 40 a week) 37.500 minutes = 575 hours = 83 days and 7 hours = 16 weeks, 3, 7/8 days. How much is your time worth ?

Add the cost of products, and if you are not Jewish and observant the shaving days would be approximately one third more, let's say for every day half a USD at today's prices, and I leave those calculations to you, bearing in mint that you are younger, and more of that expense is in your future, so factor inflation, etc... at your forecast rate.

2) put on your printed or on screen photo some beards, drawn or cut from those of bearded individuals and look at the composite to get an idea; if you (and/or YSO) like the putative results go ahead. The first days you will itch to shave because your brainwash from advertising media is hard to wean from; if you hold out you will never be sorry, and if you are weaker willed (or change SO) you can always shave then.

Last but not least: the beard has a purpose, and if you grow it that purpose is fulfilled instead of being missed on; I will discuss this with real experts of bio-energetics or those who are interested in learning about it. The fact that Wilhelm Reich shaved is due to the coercive atmosphere of his times, which is no longer relevant.

Yes, I think you should. If for no other reason, it would be an interesting experience, and you can begin future conversations with, "hey, remember when I had that beard...?" Plus, if you have kids someday, they will get a kick out of looking at pictures of their dad's bearded days. You also won't have to waste time on all that pesky shaving...just a little minor grooming and you're good to go! I love guys with beards.
