According to Jeffrey Dover, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, the only people who really should use toner are: "extremely oily or acne-prone skin and those of us who want extra cleansing after wearing a lot of makeup."
"Today most dermatologists agree toner isn't necessary. Its main purpose is to remove traces of makeup and residual cleanser, but a high-quality cleanser, even a creamy one, should rinse off easily with water alone. Some women like the fact that toner leaves their face tight and smooth. But that taut, tingly sensation actually indicates dryness." - InStyle

"Often sold as a must-use step, toners are truly optional." -- Bobbi Brown in "Bobbi Brown Beauty"
From a personal perspective, I agree with the experts above. I have oily skin, and if I skip toner, I can tell a huge difference. If you have normal skin, toner may be too drying and actually make skin conditions worse.
Bottom line: toner is a good product for those who need it, otherwise, it's just a gimmick. Do what works best for *your* skin.

Is facial toner necessary or is it a marketing gimmick?
Cosmetic brands are always pushing a multi-step facial skin care process where you have to wash, tone, and then moisturize. I get the wash and moisturize but what does a toner really do?

Look at the bottle and I'm 90% sure it'll say it contains some form of alcohol. That's why it makes your skin worse. But yeah it's definitely not required especially if you already have good skin. Why fix something that's not broken?

I prefer to just use a cleanser that prevents acne and blackheads does the same thing as toner and I have to cleanse anyways. BTW, you were totally right, toner I used to have had alcohol in it. Stupid Avon. =p

I think the alcohol has a lot to do with it. Most toners contain alcohol.
I also use witch hazel when I'm breaking out. But never conventional alcohol toner and I have pretty good skin.
