There are different types of boning, and I'm no sewing expert but I'll tell you what I'll heard.
Generally you just sew in a 1/4 inch channel and push in a piece of boning that is 1/2 inch shorter to prevent it poking through the ends. So just like a pipe.. very simple.
Plastic boning is a little bit easier because you can put it in first and sew around it since you can sew through it.. you can also sew through it at the ends. Steel is a little bit more difficult because you have to just sew and push it and, so you can't use it as a guide, however, it maintains its shape much better.
