How frequently should I replace the head on my electric shaver?
I have never replaced the head to my electric shaver and it's recently begun to give me really rough shaves. I am curious: is there a nominal period to replace the head?
Specifically, I have a Philips Norelco 6843XL.

The Norelco heads can last up to 150 shaves before needing replacement. So if you shave every day, thats approximately 5 months. If you are someone who only shaves during the work week, then you need to replace the head after 7 months. If you are lucky and only need to shave every other day you can last about ten months. If you want your head to last a year, you would have to shave no more than 3 days a week. Depending on the model and how easy it is to either clean or sharpen the head can change your time frame to last longer.

Great, I love specific details + source (in the comments)!
This should be different for everyone. As soon as you start to feel uncomfortable shaving, or you are not shaving well or missing areas, you will realize it's time to replace the razor head. I found a reliable source for you that says you should replace the razor head every 18 months on a Philips Norelco, but you're certainly welcome to replace the head more or less frequently depending on usage. I believe this is for using the razor daily, so if you were to use it twice daily, then maybe every year would be good to replace the head.
According to ElectricShaver.com, it seems like most electric razor heads are replaced every 12 months.

However, the more frequently you change the head, the better shave you will get, yet changing it too frequently could also cost more, and not be necessary.

Yep, I agree. Depends on how thick your beard is, how often you shave, and how you shave. But if it feels rough to you change them out. They will of course last much longer if you keep them clean.
I replace mine when the shave starts to be sub-par. About every 5 months. I try to order extra heads in advance.
Mine says to replace it ever three months. I don't have the same brand as you. I change mine every four months despite the fact that I don't shave more than once every five days because I notice a huge difference in shaving time and quality. with new heads.
If I'm not mistaken you can extend the life of your Norelco heads with a head sharpening kit. I have an older Norelco and got such a kit a while ago which basically has an abrasive surface which you torque the blades against to sharpen them, it seems to help. Eventually I'll need new heads but I've been able to extend the life of mine for months this way.
Can you post a link to a sharpening kit?
Yes, I am interested in this as well.
Here's one such sharpener: http://www.vollco.com/product.html
The one I have is slightly different than this, it consists of a single little tube with an abrasive (probably sandpaper), and when you remove the blades from the shaver, you manually grind them for a few seconds each in the tube to sharpen them, then reassemble the shaver.

I replace mine every two to three years. I have the Norelco model that you can use with water.

The information is in one of these manuals. My step dad had me download one of them looking for similar information and his razor wasn't working properly. I just don't remember which manual we downloaded or which model he had.
