If you want a high end watch, >$1000, I recommend an independent jeweler. I searched all over to find a good watch and consistently found an independent charged me less for the exact same watch.
I've also looked at the "Free Trade Zone" watches in international airports and tourist stops but I'm afraid they are knockoffs, they have no warranty, and I've been burnt before when buying jewelry, they overcharged me after making it sound really good.
My experience has taught me, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I guess it depends on what type of watch you want. If you just want a cheap watch to tell time, I recommend Walmart. If you want a high end watch, >$1000, I recommend an independent jeweler. Yes. There are surprisingly good discounts at your local Kmart. Mine's a block away. Don't be so danged picky about named brands. I found a Timex PLASTIC watch with large digital readout that's lasted 15 years (still running strong, kept perfect time) for a mere $10. Price of a good paperback book. Even has a little button on front you can press for backlighting at night! Plus stopwatch, two alarms, two time zones, and date.
