What's the best mouth guard I can use for basketball?

I noticed a lot of NBA players have started using mouth guards. So I decided it's probably a good idea to use a mouth guard for my basketball play as well (to protect my teeth and prevent concussions).

I've been doing some investigating, but I haven't been able to find what I've been looking for. The "boil and fit" ones seem kinda cheap http://www.shockdoctor.com/product/gel-nano.aspx

And the really amazing, professional ones are wayyy to expensive (the cheapest is $1250!)

Can you find a high quality mouth guard for basketball that will protect me, but one that won't cost me an arm and a leg??

The ReebokĀ® intermediate custom-molded mouth guard has a lower impact strip that helps locate the teeth of the lower jaw against the underside of the mouthguard. A front inner shield helps spread the impact load, and a side impact shield helps protect teeth and gums. It utilizes Smooth Air Technology to enhance performance by reducing air turbulence and maximizing oxygen uptake.

I use a simple boil and fit mouth guard for karate which is also a contact sport. I wouldn't want to use it for boxing or hockey, but I've taken a couple of shots to the jaw and not had that teeth rattling feeling. The one you point to is actually better than the style I've used for the past 5 years.

The main thing with mouthgaurds is the fit. It should be HARD to pull a mouthguard out...if it is hard to pull out, that means it is molded so well to your teeth that the suction holds it in place. The everyday "boil-and-bite" mouthguards are great at absorbing impact, but they interfere heavy with your breathing due to their poor fit. While basketball doesn't have the same amount of impact...I would suggest you look into a fighter type of mouth-piece(MMA). I used a BnB mouthpiece for months before I saved up for a custom fitted one...it made a world of difference. Next time you go in for a teeth cleaning or checkup, ask your dentist about a custom fit. It's becoming a much more common thing.

If it's still too expensive, or too much trouble, then you can make do with BnB ones...just make sure you get high quality and take the time to fit it as best you can.

Here's a link to BnBs:

In the end, I would suggest trying out several cheap ones (unless you go fitted). Everyone's mouth is shaped differently, and so you may like a mouth guard that other people HATE. Some general things to keep in mind...breathing channel DOES make a difference, be sure it is designed to include lower teeth in bracing, and don't get one that's too thick on the outside(this will screw up your breathing and the fit).

On a side note...I've never tried these guys, but...

Good point and great answer. If you are going with a boil and bite mouthguard, but a couple and practice fitting them; you won't get a proper fit the first few times you try.. I have a solid fit on mine (I threw out the first loose one) and it stays in place and does not interfere with breathing (it never moves).
