I don't think the coach should be suspended. However, I suspect that he (or she) deserves a fair heaping of bad karma, not to mention bad press. There were plenty of people at that game who could have stepped down and had a word with the coach, and yet it seems like many of the parents were participating in the same, selfish self-appeasement in cheering (egging?) on the lopsided victory. Only someone completely ignorant of the game and the spirit of sportsmanship would think that the girls deserved a 100-0 victory in these conditions. That definitely doesn't teach them any kind of lesson other than to take advantage of those less fortunate for your own personal glory. Definitely not a lesson I'd teach my daughter, nor is it very "Christian."

Now whoever set up the game, they should be questioned as to why. Or if it was a league that the dislexic girls wanted to join, well, losses are inevitable

Also, I think the fact that the opposing school specializes in learning challenged students is irrelevant. A lot of "learning challenged" students are great athletes so adding that spin to the story is unfair. The fact that they have learning disabilities, like dyslexia, has nothing to do with their loss record.

Should Micah Grimes, the girls varsity basketball coach at The Covenant School in Dallas be suspended?
In a high school basketball game against a school for learning challenged kids Coach Grimes ran the score up until it was 100 to 0.

• I must say, there seems to be a strain of defensiveness through most of these answers that is odd to me, but I'm Canadian so I'm a pussy I guess.
I'm surprised someone didn't suggest firing the loosing coach.

No. The mantra of American school sports is "WIN! WIN! WIN!". You could probably be fired for holding back. They won fair and square. Now whoever set up the game, they should be questioned as to why. Or if it was a league that the dislexic girls wanted to join, well, losses are inevitable

No, I don't think that she should be suspended. However, I do think that she (and the rest of the coaching staff) acted in poor judgment. Thankfully, this story has gotten some media attention so that a lesson can be learned from it. As a teacher, I have seen coaches who, all too often, lose sight of the real focus of their job and concentrate solely on winning. I don't think it was unethical to run the score up by so much, but I don't think it was very sportsmanlike either. Also, I think the fact that the opposing school specializes in learning challenged students is irrelevant. A lot of "learning challenged" students are great athletes so adding that spin to the story is unfair. - Fact Refuted
I think u misunderestimate the amount of learning that goes on during a basketball practice, but it's easy to understand why one might think sports are mindless, or that is to say, the sum ability of a team is entirely measured by athletic ability.

I did not say sports are mindless. I said that having learning disabilities, like dyslexia which is a learning disorder related to reading and writing, has nothing to do with athletic ability.
I have taught MANY students with "learning disabilities" who excel in various sports.
It did not say these girls were mentally or developmentally delayed in anyway just that they were "learning challenged," which is usually understood to mean common classroom learning disabilities.

That link doesn't work.
I would argue that their basketball record has more to do with the size of their school than any learning disabilities. This school in question only has TWENTY girls total in the school. Students are sent to this school because of academic need, they are not recruited for their sports ability.

http://tinyurl.com/cm798u should work, no idea how the ; got in there.
No question the size of the school's population must have contributed, nice one.
You have realigned your statement from "nothing to do with" to "more to do with", which is all I was refuting in the first place.

No, he should not be suspended unless he broke any state rules. In Colorado, I am subject to rules on how I conduct my practices and games for high school soccer. There is a mercy rule in soccer and many other sports. If there are no other rules that he broke he should not be suspended regardless of what type of school it was.

Point shaving is now being encouraged at the covenant school, let the other team score, don't score when you have the chance, sounds like point shaving to me. Win if you can but only by a little bit. Maybe we can get the college and professional teams to point shave as well so the other team won't develop a inferiority complex. Oh geez, i just remembered no one let the detroit lions win a game this past year, but maybe some teams let them score so they wouldn't feel so bad. So yea, it's ok to point shave in high school but remember kids once you leave high school don't do it anymore cause that would be illegal

Wonder if the school has the same policy regarding academics?
If they participated in television shows like " It's Academic " where one team's knowledge of subjects is pitted against teams from other schools, If covenant's team answered every question before the other team, would that be running up the score ? Oh yea, they keep score in those competitions too. Would the staff at covenant be equally ashamed of the academic team ?
