Actually the Yankees have retired number 42. Offthedome is right about Mariano Rivera & the timing of the league-wide retirement of #42. I think there are a couple other MLB players wearing number 42 out there in addition to Rivera.
I bet the Yankees will retire #42 "again" for Rivera after he retires.

Mariano Rivera is number 42 and has been for his entire career. Apparently he was grandfathered by the league-wide retirement of the number, which happened in honor of Jackie Robinson after Rivera became a Yankee.
