Probably not. Especially when economic times are tough, the electorate tends to want to switch parties fairly frequently. If Al Gore had been elected in 2000, he'd have had a reasonably decent chance of being reelected as the incumbent in 2004 (depending on who the GOP would have nominated as candidate against him during his reelection bid). At that point, once the Dems lost the incumbency due to term limits, the electorate would probably have thrown them out and elected a GOP candidate.

I agree with what you are saying, but I think this whole disowning of Bush also never would have happened so you never would have seen so many people running around saying they are conservative because they still would admit they are Republicans.

No I don't think so because you never would have had the rise of conservatism under Bush, (they can run and say they are conservatives and not Republicans but the truth is Bush was far more conservative than Reagan was) so what you would have had is 4 or 8 years of Al Gore then maybe the Republicans might have had a Ridge/Jeb Bush ticket in 2008 and the dems? could it have been Hillary or Obama Maybe, Im thinking the dems would have done more to avert the melt down due to a belief in Keynesian Economics VS Laissez-faire but during the normal business cycle the republican probably would have won in 2008 and it probably would not have been about being a conservative or social issues.
