I like teh name Avery--it is different, yet not starnge
Asker's rating:
Avery has to be my favorite. It works very well for a girl, contrary to what hatebear says. Like I said, my friend's little girl is named Avery and I think it is the cutest and most unique name on this list.

My friends just had a baby and they named it Avery. She has a ton of hair and is really cute. Good answer.

Vesper, for a girl. While this was the name of James Bond's girl in Casino Royale, it also evokes "vespers" or evening prayers.

For a girl: Layla
For a boy: Gabe (not Gabriel, just Gabe) --> hey ultrasounds have been wrong in the past.

BTW Scarlett is really cute. Congratulations. I hope everything goes well with the rest of the pregnancy.

Ethan or Charles for boys
Elizabeth or Helen for girls

All are good strong names

Way to stick with the wife's suggestions. Our main choice, Scarlett, was my wife's suggestion, but I actually really liked it. If we had been having a boy, it might have been Chase or Vincent or some other really strong male name.

I'm a very big fan Sienna.

What made you choose Scarlett? Any reason you chose two t's instead of one?

Scarlett is a good, semi-classic name. It looks way better than Scarlet with 1 T. And it's far from being the most popular name, although going up in popularity since 2000 significantly. In 2000 it was the 1000(something)th most popular name, in 2007 it was the 200(something)th most popular name.

And we really liked it.

It's probably getting more popular because of Scarlett Johansson. It's a very lovely name :)

It may seem odd, but for some reason I have long thought that Reality (as in the state of existence, not the housing market) is a pretty name for a girl. Alise is cute, as well, but unfortunately a commercial name for birth control now, though I think the spelling is different. That would still be kind of a bad omen, I think. Magdalene is a beautiful name... and a real possibility, I think.

For a boy, I am not sure... cross that bridge, when we come to it, I suppose. Or "if", rather.

Congratulations on your daughter!

To make a pretty educated choice, find Beyond Jennifer and Jason, Madison and Montana by Redmond Satran and Rosenkrantz, or any of their other books. They're completely redoing their landmark book above, as Beyond Ava and Aiden, to be published next year.

Satran and Rosenkrantz follow naming trends on a city by city, state by state level, from year to year. They tell you which names are on the rise, which are so popular your child will be forever have to tag her last initial on, which ones are on their way out so your child seems backwards to people even before they've have met her. They organize names not by meanings or alphabetically, but by categories: So Far In They're Out, Botanical Names, Fitting In/Standing Out (the category I selected names from), So Far Out They're In, Feminissima, Bad Boy Names, Lesser Known Saints, and many more. The grand categories are Image and Style, with subcategories from that.

They also have tons of great tips. Things they urge you to think about are things like Sibling Names (are Blake and Emily brother and sister or two sisters?); ethnicity matching (Declan Jacques Wang-Veracruz is quite a smorgasbord), and more.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard a parent say "You know, I thought Emily was such a unique name until she started preschool and she was one of 5 in a class of 15"! Emily, as the book will tell you, has been in either 1st or 2nd place for over 5 years. It keeps switching places with Emma.

The book will also open your eyes to "name cognates", where a bunch of very similar names are really popular, like Michaela/Mikayla/Kayla/Kaylie/Kylie and rank the cognates. It also will give you alternatives if you just love a name but don't really want to use it because of its popularity. The suggested names either sound similar, or are similar in tone and feel.

I used the most updated version to name each of my three kids, and I constantly get compliments on their names. They are familiar enough but different enough to be attractive and memorable.

I personally love Daphne, Chloe, Mackenzie, and Zoe mostly because they are unique and not so overused as some names are. They have a somewhat exotic sound to them, and I want my children to be unique and individual in this world of everyone named John and Mary. I generally look back at the Social Security Administration's records for which names were popular each year and pick one that was hot in the 1930s - 1950s. Scarlett is also one of those unique names, good choice.

My favorite names for girls are Alexa and Brooke. I particularly like names that have quite a few options for nicknames depending on the taste of the kid. With Alexa, there is also Lexa, Lex, and Alex with Alexa being softer sounding and more formal as well as the more tomboyish choice of Alex :-)

For a boy, my favorite is Andrew which also has both formal and informal options - Andrew, Andy, Drew.

Scarlett is nice but what can you use for a good related nickname? Scar?

You could call her Scar, or Letty. Letty was a really common nickname back when. But it was usually used with Leticia. I'll probably call her Scar, or my little Scarlita.
