What do you think about (F1 team) Force India's decision to release Giancarlo Fisichella from his contract to race for Ferrari in Monza?

From what I have read, Force India F1 owner Vijay Mallya released his driver Giancarlo Fisichella from a contract with the team without compensation, in order to let Fisichella (an Italian driver) fulfill his dream of racing for Ferrari on their home track in Itally. Fisichella will remain at Ferrari for the rest of the season and will become a reserve there in 2010.

What do you think? Act of compassion? Marketing strategy? Both?

When Giancarlo Fisichella signed for Force India in 2008, there were many people (myself included) who thought that it was the only drive he could get after he was dumped by Renault.

Others thought that he was there merely to add some credibility to a small team that would languish at the back, while he picked up a nice paycheck from the billionaire team owner. And while their first season wasn't spectacular, it wasn't a disaster either.

Its clear now, that Fisi wasn't just making up the numbers, and he was giving it his all in a team that was far more supportive to him than Flavio Briatorre at Renault. Certainly the situation that Nelson Piquet jnr described after his sacking there seems to reflect what Fisi went through (although if the legal department are looking at this I'm in no way suggesting that Fisi was ever ordered to crash!!!)

With the promise of a drive in the most famous name in motor sport ahead of him, I'm incredibly impressed at the way that Vijay Mallya has handled this. If he had put his foot down, I'm sure he could have forced his driver to stay, Fisi would have honoured his contract, but the disappointment involved in keeping him against his will would be deep for both parties.

At the Belgian Grand Prix it was clear that Force India were doing everything they could to keep him. In other teams this could have become a spat or a legal nightmare that could have poisoned the team and destroyed much of what they had. The fact that this has been handled so well speaks wonders about the professionalism, honor and decency of the team, Vijay Mallya and Giancarlo Fisichella. They are all class acts in my book

Giancarlo Fisichella will race for Ferrari at the remaining five rounds of 2009 after Force India agreed to release him from his contract on Thursday. Fisichella will replace Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer as stand-in for the injured Felipe Massa, starting at next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. He will then serve as Ferrari's reserve driver in 2010.

Force India have yet to confirm who will take over from Fisichella alongside Adrian Sutil in the team’s number 21 car, though third driver Vitantonio Liuzzi is already being tipped to succeed his fellow Italian.

Hi,
Please have a look at the Copy and Pasting on Mahalo.

What I'm really looking for is what you think about it, not the story itself.

I think that this is a refreshing change of attitude in a sport where every little thing ends up in a legal battle.

A drive for Ferarri is a once in a life time opportunity for anyone and Force india did a good deed letting him go.

Who knows the experience that he gains from his new drive may prove very fruitful for Force india if Fisichella returns to Force India next year.

Big up yourselves Force india for behaving like humans !

Given that Fizi is a Italian and this would be his home Grand Prix and that punched well over his weight at the last GP in Belgium, I think Force India may have been fighting an up hill battle trying to stop him. But the contract would have been enough to do this if they were NOT willing. Thanks to the achievements of last weekend Force India will already get the additional funding sponsorship it needs to be more competitive for next season, and hence extra strong performances will not significantly strengthen its hand in this regard. Also, I suspect Ferrari are prepared to pay a good and useful amount for the privilege which should be good business sense for Force India in the longer term.

Vijay has said that there is no compensation from Ferrari for Fisi, and I do believe him.

However, I think you are right.
Ferrari have incredibly long memories, and in the future, if Force India ever decide to leave the Mercedes engine package then they'll have an option from their friends in red....
