I have mixed emotions about this and any other space exploration missions. On one hand it's really cool that we are discovering things that we once thought never existed. On the other hand I'm kind of annoyed with the amount of money that gets pumped into this research.
Rather than looking to the stars for information that is irrelevent to most of us on earth, we should be focusing on making Earth a better planet.
Finding water on the moon is great and all but what about the water here on our planet? We are running out and the money that we waste by destroying missiles into the moon could go towards research on how to save our own water.
I suppose if all was well with the world then I would be the first to cheer on space research but until then we need to figure out our priorities...

In addition, the cool factor of space exploration will pull promising students into the hard sciences and engineering fields, providing society with highly trained individuals whose impact gradually permeates society at large.
Finally, the more we focus on off-Earth activities, the more people realize there is more that unites us than what separates us, improving relations on Earth.

NASA found water on the Moon. Your thoughts?
Will this be a major push for the Mahalo Moon Colony also?

voting this helpful cause you had the guts to discuss what should be done about earth, and not the "water on the moon".

The technology which will be required to put up a moon base, and then a Mars base will provide a wide array of technology spin-offs which will be of enormous benefit on Earth. For example, a moon base would need to have a tightly controlled system for recycling air and water for very extended periods of time. This could help in developing the tech needed for making high efficiency Earth-based water filtration and recovery systems. That's just one example, and I'm sure there will be many others we can't even conceive of yet, as more challenges crop up and are met. Recall that when the laser was invented 50-odd years ago nobody had any idea what it would be useful for. It was dubbed "an answer in search of questions." Finding dual uses for new tech is an ongoing activity with enormous societal benefits. In addition, the cool factor of space exploration will pull promising students into the hard sciences and engineering fields, providing society with highly trained individuals whose impact gradually permeates society at large.
