I agree, NASA should have known better. It's not like they don't watch the show. Consider that Garrett Reisman chatted with him from the space station. Yes it was a joke, he is known for this and has managed to get a number of things named after himself: an eagle, a mascot, a bridge, etc.
What NASA needs to do, is to be as gracious and graceful as Hungary when he won the contest to name the Hungarian Bridge after himself. The ambassador came on the show and gave two requirements. One was insurmountable as Stephen would need to be dead for the bridge to be named after him according to Hungarian law. But the ambassador gave him a Hungarian passport, etc.
If they really don't want to name the space module after him then they should name something else after him (not a toilet) or make him an honorary astronaut. He's a total geek not a total jerk. They made the rules, they should abide by them.

As the NASA naming contest just fell for Colbert prank, I think NASA should name it "Serenity" after the sci-fi movie.
"Colbert" crushed all of NASA's four poll options, pulling in 230,539 votes; the second-place choice, NASA suggestion "Serenity" (a nod to sci-fi hero Joss Whedon) was more than 40,000 votes behind.

One of the things that Colbert does very well is to use his show to raise the profile of things he believes in. Some worthwhile causes that have benefited from his attention:
1. The yellow ribbon fund via the WristStrong campaign ($171K and counting for wounded veterans)
2. Save the schools fund ($50K for public schools)
3. The Smithsonian Portrait Gallery got a 57% increase in visitors the month after his visit and the display of his portrait.
4. He has been in a large part responsible for raising the profile of the lack of democratic representation by the residents of the District of Congress.
Further, Colbert is NOT a johnny-come-lately to space. He's had Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director of NY's Hayden Planetarium, on the show 5 times. He had Garrett Reisman broadcast an interview from the ISS.
What NASA should do is show up on the Colbert Show and ask Colbert what to name the module. They would probably come with the name "WristStrong" or some other Colbertism that is actually worth while.

I think it should be called "Colbert". He won fair and square. They're smart people over there at NASA. If they chose to have a write-in ability, the knew what might happen. By the way... I LOVED this bit and laughed at the picture of the Serenity pads when he showed them. Classic!

If you make a contest like this you MUST abide by your own rules. I can't believe that they didn't know that this was a possible outcome. Media rule. I think it's great to see and obvious example like this. It just goes to show how powerful TV and the internet are. I hope they do name it after Colbert. He won and so to the victor go the spoils.
