I really like the Purple Background. What you have so far is exactly what I want.
You have to think about what you want your brand to represent.
Make people feel like they are smarter for having followed @astronomy
What does it say about a person who follows @astronomy?
Just think about what idealing you want @astronomy to mean, and represent
that in your tweets.
Also make your self as credible as possible, meaning what level of comfort or authority do your followers have in the information you provide. This is key.
Also,When I sign up for news twitters like the Huffington Post or the Ny Times
They posted like 100 times a day and my whole page was filled. They may have categories, but I don't want to mess with that.
I personally would love to learn more about astronomy, so I would like stuff that is mostly informative. For entertainment, I think pictures are always effective. I think it could be very successful. Good Luck

I'd be interested in a heavily filtered stream of astronomy news that included major developments as well as lesser known factoids.

- Use replies, but sparingly. (a.k.a. don't flood with replies ;) )
That's just twitter etiquette.
As for the content, do whatever you want. It's your account. So long as the users are interested in astronomy, they'll follow you.

What type of news are you offering? Will it be your analysis of the importance of some recent events or just links to other sources? I'd be interested in a heavily filtered stream of astronomy news that included major developments as well as lesser known factoids.

I really like to see links to amazing photography when it comes to astronomy. I also want to know when there are events I should be waking my kids up to see. Our whole family also loves "wow" facts. If your twitter feed is a hit among educators, both in schools and at home, you'll succeed.
