The more creative answer gets the $5.00
Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This question was something I struggled with for a few years myself. My solution began with the internet, but the end result was very old-fashioned:

Support your local music scene!

If you have very little free time, why not use some of it to check out local bands who are struggling to "make it" in your home town or closest big city? Use the internet to see who is playing at small venues in your area, then search to see if they have a website of their own. Almost every small and medium sized band has a MySpace page with a sample of their music. That way you won't be wasting your time with bad music.

This is a fun way to get out of the house and away from your work for a few hours every other week or so. You may--no--you will discover that local artists have amazing talent. And you won't get bored with their songs on the radio! At least not until they make it big. Who knows? You may even meet new people you wish to spend your precious free time with. People who like similar music usually have a lot in common.

You don't know what local music you are missing unless you get away from your radio and out of your house. There are great bands that travel all over the country playing in small to medium sized venues. Fame has nothing to do with talent.

I did this a couple years ago and it found me my two favorite bands. (Great Big Sea and Josh Ritter) Unfortunately, it's quasi legal.

I used Limewire to search for random words in song titles. I did ocean, sea, and boat and found a bunch of stuff about, well, ocean, sea and boat. Most I didn't like, but hey, Great Big Sea.

And the truth is that I deleted all of the downloads and bought every CD from those two bands because I liked them so much and wanted everything they had.

this is actually what I used to do back in the day - it was fun. I used to type the word "scratch" for examples of hip-hop songs with scratching on them, or "remix" for lots of remix versions of songs. Other fun ones included "DJ", "Live", "Acoustic".

Unfortunately, at the moment, I don't have time to do this.

I like the typing random words answer. You can also do this on a website called lastfm.com. This is basically like a free radio, but you can also search for bands or songs you like, as well as create a profile and join the community. You can find your friends on it and sync your itunes up to it in order for other people to see what you've been listening to. This is a great way to also see what your friends like in terms of songs or bands, and there's little work on your part. All you need to do is browse and listen!

I find Audiolizer very good for finding new music.
It indexes all music on YouTube and the search will find keywords, and song titles.
Its search results show a long page and its quick to sample in the mini viewer.
Then you can make a playlist or just play the item back.

Its perfect for sampling the music of bands found using MusicMap

The best and most time effective way to find music that suits you is musicmap.com. You type in the name of a band or singer that you like and it gives you a cool "map" of all the bands and artists that have music similar to the one you like. It is seriously brilliant and I have found many bands that I have never heard of, but who's music I have fallen in love with. Check it out.

Music-map.com is the actual site...this is what happens when you answer questions on your iPod touch.

this is a great site if I had more time. Unfortunately, it still requires some time to do research about each of those bands and listen to a few tunes by each of them. Thanks for the link!

i would like to recommend last.fm
that is a music community website based on free radio and social network.
it has a feature that show which band has most hype for a period.
search by the band's name or genre. or simply look in the hype list.
