I typically visit my general practitioner doctor before I do any international travel just so I can be sure that I'm 100% healthy/prepared for the trip. There are a lot of foreign diseases out there and it's likely you won't even know about them to prepare for otherwise.

The Center for Disease Control certainly recommends it!

Travel medicine doctors exist, but if none are available, the CDC website is the best first stop to review what diseases to be concerned with & how to prevent catching a disease. Outside of symptoms from dysentery and parasites, avoid potential hospitals visits for things like car wrecks.

Actually, I use my chiropractor, because he's traveled to several countries. When I went to China, my regular doctor just wanted to give me all the shots he could. I asked my chiropractor about it, and told me exactly what I needed, common illnesses from eating food and drinking liquids, and how to help combat them. I would ask for advice from people who have been to Asian countries for a considerable amount of time, in combination to asking your doctor.
