It's very hard to describe the Renaissance period in just a few paragraphs, but I'll try.
The Renaissance style of art was the fusing of art and science.
Of creating a two dimensional work of art look more three dimensional.
During this time artist and scientists were closely connected and the role of both were raised to a higher respected profession.
May artists at this time were also scientists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Piero della Francesca. Painting also grew from tempera on frescos to a much richer oil base, giving richer colors and more illusions of depth.
The Mannerist style in art at came during the later years in Renaissance and lasted until the Gothic period.
A good description of mannerist style of painting:
"The early Mannerists in Florence—especially the students of Andrea del Sarto: Jacopo da Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino—are notable for elongated forms, precariously balanced poses, a collapsed perspective, irrational settings, and theatrical lighting."
Many people still argue over this style, but it was based on a conception of what 'ideal' art should look like or convey.
